Mexborough and Swinton Times November 18 1927
Denaby’s First Time.
The Next Job.
Denaby have reached the Competition Proper for the first time in their history. Mexborough were the first in the Midland league competition to reach that stage, when they played Chesterfield last season, and lost narrowly 2-1 at Chesterfield after a strenuous battle. Wath got virtually as far as two seasons ago, when they too were beaten by Chesterfield – this time on their own ground; but that was before the competition was rearranged to bring the first round into November.
Denaby have to meet Southport, the football league club, tomorrow week, and the luck of the draw has given them ground advantage.
I can definitely assure local football followers that tbe match will be played at Tickhill Square. Southport have not an, inspiring record this season : in 12 ‘ matches they have won only four. But the Third Division standard of football has improved greatly this season, and there can be no getting away from the fact that Denaby have a mighty stiff task before them to survive the next round.
On the form they showed yesterday at Boston, however—with an improvement in the centre-forward position—they might confidently be expected to put up a fight that will make Southport- go all the way—and possibly a bit further!
The, Denaby team for the Midland League match with Gainsborough at Tickhill Square tomorrow (2.40) hag not been finally decided on. A: new forward may be seen. The remainder of the team will probably be the same as that which turned out with such success at Boston yesterday.
