Special interest attached to the match at Frickley in that it officially marked the beginning of two seasoned players careers as club managers. Enough the result of the game favoured the manager of purely local reputation, Matt Taylor’s team were certainly a credit to him. Their performances serve to show how misleading practice games can be.

I must admit that the majority of the new players did not impress me particularly favourable way in the last trial game, but they were a very different set on Saturday’s form. Young Fearnley in particular took the eye, thanks to the able prompt and of Eddie Fleetwood, who seems to be playing better than ever. There was also much to commend in the work of Picken in goal.

Many bitter remarks were passed by disappointed Frickley supporters as they left the field, but these people must remember that Rome was not built in a day, and it is only fair to give the new manager their chance to obtain results. Billy Johnston himself was on Saturday a valuable unit in a strong left-wing, both played well and Purcell fully justifying themselves.

I think it was a mistake on Frickley’s part, however, to rely too much on this wing. It did not take Denaby long to discover that their opponents were pinning their hopes mainly on the left wing thrusts, and they naturally took steps to block this pool. More use should have been made of the right wing, where shall was outstanding.
