Denaby and Frickley draw
A keenly fought game
Frickley Colliery 2, Denaby United 2
They had scored both their goals before Frickley had got one home, but it was certain that they would not hold the lead to the end. Frickley included in their team Rogerson at inside right, and it was his first appearances since he was so badly injured at Scunthorpe in January. Both Gittos and Wallerton were absent through unavoidable happenings.
The home team lost the toss and made an excellent beginning. Coming straight down to the Denaby goal, where Robson shot into the hands of Rome age, and Rogerson missed by inches. Denaby then retaliated smartly with the result that before the expiration of the free minute’s Pearson gave them the lead with a splendid cross shot which Gibson had no chance of saving.
At this stage, it may be remarked Frickley were playing with only 10 men one of their side having arrived late. The Denaby goal was once more attacked and the ball was put on top of the net. Short passing was then adopted, and this led to a period of mid field play, from which Denaby were the 1st to escape, and Gibson made a good save by fisted away a dangerous centre by Glew from amongst a crowd of players.
Frickley became attackers, and from a powerful shot by Glew, Bromage did well to save. Robson then got on the move and broke through his own, but as he shot from just outside the penalty area he was brought down. The ball beat Bromwich, but Frickley had to be content with a free kick. From which Denaby cleared, Robson was again unlucky for in finishing a series of heads in the Denaby goalmouth he placed the ball on top of the net.
Play was transferred to the other end, where Frickley’s hard worked defence took the sting out of Denaby attack. Towards the end of the half when Frickley were doing all the attacking Denaby showed resentment and three free kicks for fouls were given against them in quick succession and Taylor was cautioned by the referee.
When the interval came the visitors were lending by only one goal.
Frickley open the second half strongly and were awarded with penalty fairly early on. Marsh took the kick, and sent in a strong drive which Bromwich deftly turned round the post for a corner which was comfortably cleared, Frickley were the better side even now, and pressed continuously. From a corner to Frickley the Denaby goal had a very lucky escape, Bromwich mishandled the ball and only saving narrowly. Hawkins headed away a fine effort by glue, and Taylor only just averted conceding a corner in a duel with Rogerson from the breakaway, Denaby went further ahead Bussey scoring after Gibson had only partially saved the previous shot.
From a corner kick to Frickley, Rodgerson headed in a very neatly and reduced the lead. Bromage gave another corner by tipping a shot over the bar. The equaliser came through Marsh who crowned a brilliant run by the home forwards by dribbling the ball into the net. Frickley were awarded a freekick. Robinson been sent down again, but the shot was too high.
