Denaby Utd – Gainsborough 1  Denaby 0 – F A Cup Final Qualifying Round

12 November 1928

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 12 November 1928

Gainsborough 1  Denaby United 0

Denaby United started too fast a pace at Gainsborough, and were eventually beaten,1 —0,  on a heavy ground. They kept up their speed for fully half an hour, but after Brown scored for Gainsborough with a 30 yards’ shot, they either “shot their bolt” or were discouraged by the simple goal which placed them in arrears.

Afterwards Gainsborough came into the picture, and, with little more accuracy in shooting, Denaby would have suffered a heavier defeat.

Denaby were a good deal like the home team, being possessed with a good defence and a weak attack. Gainsborough’s half-backs were a strong force, Clark making a successful re appearance after his long injury.

Denaby’s chief strength also laid in their half-back lino. It was a miserable day, and the attendance suffered in consequence, only 2.400 being present.
