Denaby Draw at Gainsborough

Although Denaby managed to make a draw a Gainsborough, they were a lucky side in that they had not several goals against them in the first hour. How their goal escaped so many times it is difficult to say. It was remarkable.
However, Denaby deserve the highest commendation for the splendid spurt they made when two goals down—scored by Talbot and Shearman. They put on pace, and the individual run and goal by Hamilton was the best thing of the match. The last goal was also the work of Hamilton, during a scuffle.
Cowen was an improvement at right-back for Trinity, and Archer did well in the centre.
Mexboro’s Third Successive Win.
Mexborough Town 2 Wath Athletic 1
Wath, at Hampden Road, yesterday, found Mexborough in splendid shooting form. Quite fifty good shots were sent in on the Wath goal but Topham gave a fine display.
Walker appeared in the Mexborough forward line and he was prominent, in the movement which led to both the Mexborough goals. The score was opened by Rob Hill, after 20 minutes and the second was got by Reed. For two-thirds of the game Mexborough were attacking and the Wath goal bore a charmed life in the second half. Harry Walker got four terrific shots on the mark, and on one occasion hit the cross-bar with a hard drive. Wath played through the second half with only ten men, Hargreaves having to leave the field, injured, as a result of a collision with Hill. J Nuttall scored Wath’s only goal late in the game.
This was Mexborough’s third successive victory during the holidays.
An Odd Goal Win for Wombwell.
Wombwell 3 Rotherham County Reserves 2
Wombwell deservedly avenged their defeat the previous day by taking both points troy Rotherham County Reserves at Wombwell, yesterday, before about 2,000 spectators. The game was full of thrills and surprises, but play was marred to a great extent by a high wind which blew diagonally across the ground. Rotherham had what advantage the gale offered in the first but the home side forced the play with great skill and determination, and Woods gave them the lead just before the interval.
In the second half a powerful drive by Alf Smelt from 30 yards’ range reached the net, and after some remarkably skilful dribbling, Parton got Wombwell’s third. Clarkson and Wallace replied for the Reserves.
A Decisive Turning of the Table at Grimsby.
Grimsby Town Reserve 5 Boston Town 0
Grimsby Town Reserve were beaten 5-2 at Boston on Monday, but they turned the table decisively yesterday at Blundell Park, winning 5-0.
The home were the better side in the opening half. Miller scored for Grimsby with a beautiful ground shot, after beating three opponents. Robson missed narrowly for Boston, his shot hitting the cross-bar. In the second half Raby, Lewis, and Talk (two) added goals for Grimsby, who were much superior.
Harrogate 2 Castleford 1
Harrogate beat Castleford Town at Harrogate yesterday, by two goals to one. Slater scored first with a fine shot after receiving from Watmough, and Smith (J. H.) gained the second with a shot from close range. Just before the interval Roe headed in for Castle ford from a pass by Bartlett. Play was keen throughout the second halt Castleford doing most of the attacking.
Double for Barnsley Res.
Barnsley Res. 2 Rotherham Town 1
Barnsley Res. and Rotherham Town met in their return game at Oakwell, yesterday, before 3,000 spectators and Barnsley completed a winning double in winning by the odd goal of three. The football reached a very good standard and after an even and goalless first half, Barnsley developed sustained superiority, though Rotherham made a good fight to the finish. Kay opened the score for Barnsley with a long shot, which bounced over Roebuck, but the Rotherham goalkeeper gave a fine display, making a series of clever saves. Elliott, who, will Godfrey, was conspicuous in the Town attack equalised and Retford replied for Barnsley with the winning goal. Prior to the interval Spoor failed to convert a penalty.
Doncaster Defeated at Hull.
Hull City Reserves 2 Doncaster Rovers 0
Hull City Reserves beat Doncaster Rovers 2-0 at Hull, yesterday. There were eight changes in the home side. Play in the first half was uninteresting, boil sides making many mistakes. In the second half, during an attack by the home team, Williams handled, and Hudspeth scored from the penalty. A few minutes late a fine passing bout by Taylor and Wood resulted in Hudspeth again scoring. Play was much livelier in this half, and each goal had narrow escapes.
