No ‘Happy New Year’ For Denaby.

Grantham 11  Denaby United 0

There was no ‘Happy New Year’ for Denaby United in Saturday’s Midland League visit to Grantham, where they were slammed by eleven goals scored by Sewell (3), Gaskell (4), williams, Bosnell (2), and former Denaby wing forward, Wright. Three of the eleven were scored within four minutes in the first half.

Denaby United president. Mr. Sam Peck, whom Denaby supporters are very happy to see out and about again after his recent illness, was at Grantham and told me this week (writes the Sports Editor) that Denaby’s remarkable defeat was hard to explain. ‘Don’t take any credit from Grantham,’ he said. I have rarely seen a team play so well – and every time they shot they were on target.’

This was one of Denaby’s Heaviest Midland League defeats for several seasons. Heaviest in previous seasons was their 9-1 drubbing by Notts County on December 18th, 1954. in season 1953-54 they lost to hull City Reserves in this game) and to Goole 8-2, and in season 1952-53 they lost to Notts Forest 9-2 on February 14, 1953.
