One Over the Eight at Grimsby
Denaby Fare Badly

Grimsby Town Reserves 9 Denaby United 0

Method was responsible for Denaby’s heaviest defeat of the season at Grimsby last weekend, Grimsby, incidentally gaining their biggest win of the season. There were times when Denaby looked like scoring, but failed when within range, while on the other hand, Grimsby were always dangerous. Although Earnshaw, in the Denaby goal, made several mistakes, he made numerous brilliant saves. Denaby’s display was vastly different to their display against Bradford the previous week. The forwards, after the first few minutes, were erratic in their shooting. Fleetwood was, as usual ever energetic, and Burnell and Ross, centre forward and outside left respectively on trial, put in some useful work.

“Quite an afternoon.”

Theaker, in the home goal had a quiet afternoon, while Annables and Bellamy were never seriously troubled. The halfbacks combined well with the quick moving forward line, of which Hinchcliffe, the Denaby youth, and he Taylor, a left-wing grandchild, were outstanding.

Denaby started on the attack and in the first minute Theaker made a fine save from Fleetwood, and later from Burnell. Grimsby attacked on the right and within two minutes took the lead, Hinchcliffe bundling the ball past Earnshaw. Denaby looked like equalising until Theaker cleared the danger after saving from Burnell.

Taylor, on the home left, put in some useful work, and from one of his many centres Ponting beat the defence and shot past the advancing Earnshaw. Just before the interval a show rose to the occasion when making a great leap across the goal to beat down a shot from Hinchcliffe.

Soon after resuming Hinchliffe scraped the bar. Grimsby kept up the pressure and the ground pass from Taylor enable Ponting to trick Uren, shake off Sykes and beat Earnshaw.

A movement initiated by firmly should have helped Denaby to reduce the deficit, but Machin drove high over the bar from close range.

Ponting again eluded Sykes to dash forward. Earnshaw came out but failed to gather the ball on the Grimsby leader secured the fourth goal .

Twice in quick succession Earnshaw saved in thrilling fashion. Once Hinchcliffe outwitted two opponents and, fastening on to a pass from Baldry, drove in a terrific ground shot for the far side of the goal, but making a great spring. Earnshaw managed to take the ball at the face of the upright and clear.

However, Hinchcliffe accepted a low-pass from Taylor, took a deliberate aim and drove the ball home. Another pass from Taylor saw Hinchcliffe score the six goal, while soon afterwards he added a seventh.

Following up a well judged forward pass by Baldry, Ponting added the eighth. Three minutes later, Taylor made the running to place the ball at the feet of Hinchcliffe, who coolly scored his fifth goal in his sights nine.

Denaby had a chance of reducing the arrears when Annables fell and left Burnell with an open goal, the Theaker, dashing forward, smothered the Denaby man’s effort. Just before the end Ponting again scored, but he was ruled offside.
