Ground Record In Danger Tomorrow ?
ALL Denaby United’s allocation of stand seats for tomorrow’s F.A. Cup first-round tie with Oldham Athletic were snapped up at Denaby Reserves’ home game on Saturday. Oldham have asked for 50 seats in the main stand and 100 seats on the Conanby stand.
On Sunday club officials were busy “marking off the seat spaces and Mr. Sam Peck, Denaby president and Mr. Arthur Roberts (picture), Denaby ,secretary-manager were confident that the ground record would be broken.
Years Ago
Mr. Peck told a “South Yorkshire Times” sports reporter that Mr. ‘Billy’ Astbury, life-member, now living in retirement at Scarborough, had told them that the record was established many years ago when more than 7,000 people crowded into the ground to see Denaby play Doncaster Rovers.
Mr. Roberts is pinning his faith in his young side, and said on Sunday: “Cup-tie football will win this match.”
Both Mr. Roberts and Mr. Peck were at Hartlepools on Saturday to watch Oldham in action, and Mr. Roberts said Denaby’s playing area and ground facilities compared more favourably with those at Hartlepools.
There will be no clash over colours to-morrow. Oldham play in blue and white, but strangely enough were playing in red, Denaby’s colours—at Hartlepools.
Please Be Early!
President Peck stressed that there will be no entrance for the public at the gate at the rear of the main stand—only players, officials and Press would be admitted there. Spectators must enter the ground through the normal turnstiles, and stand ticket-holders then transfer to the two stands. Gates will be open at one p.m., and Denaby appeal to spectators to be as early as possible. This will help them to control the accommodation on the ground.
In the event of a replay Oldham favour Tuesday, but Denaby would prefer a date later in the week, probably Thursday, but said Mr. Peck: “There isn’t going to be a replay!” He tips Denaby to win at the first attempt.
