Watch Those Bottom Clubs, Denaby!

Denaby United’s players and supporters are rapidly becoming aware of the teams they must fear most in the Yorkshire League campaign…it’s the ones at the BOTTOM of the League.

On Saturday, for the third time this year, Denaby United played a team propping up the rest of the league and for the third time Denaby failed to pick up a couple of easy pots

In fact Heeley were two goals up with just ten minutes left to play, as Denaby left all their glorious form of the early season behind them and came down to the level of the opposition.

As in the matches at Norton Woodseats (1-2) and Hatfield (1-1), Denaby came unstuck against a team they should have thrashed on all known form.

WORST PITCH

On what Denaby wing-half Peter Pettit described as “the worst pitch we have played on in the league.”, Heeley held Denaby in the first half and then looked to have grabbed points with a 1-2 in the second.

IMPOSSIBLE

Good football was well-nigh impossible in the mud, and though Denaby were on top in the first half, there were no clear-cut scoring chances. England came nearest when he cut inside and hit his shot just over the top.

But it was Heeley who opened the scoring early in the second half, when a good ball from Toyne send the winger away, his shot from the edge of the box curled into the top corner.

Spurred on by the goal, Heeley pressed their advantage and netted a second after 70 minutes and Farrish turned a shot onto the post only to see the rebound rammed into the net

With Harvey fighting to keep the defence together, and Morley doing a lot of work up front, Denaby hit back but with ten minutes to go the cause was beginning to look lost

FROM THE SPOT

Then Harold Sapey was pulled down in the penalty area and Roger Willey scored from the spot. Now Denaby fought for the equaliser and when Sumpner followed up when Willey’s shot was pushed out by the ‘keeper, it looked to be a certain goal.

But the winger was trying too hard, and his attempt to make sure was cleared off the line.

Minutes later Whitehead headed a corner across goal and Howard Morley went up to score the goal which gave Denaby a point.
