United Left It to Extra Time to Clinch Cup Tie

Hull Brunswick 2, Denaby United 3

IT took Denaby United just two minutes to settle this Yorkshire League match but they waited until the opening period of extra time to do it, although they had been generally in command for most of the game.

Denaby opened strongly and twice in the opening minutes were unlucky not to go ahead. Hull goalkeeper. Moore, was the busiest man on the field, at this stage, he was not beaten until 15 minutes had gone.

First goal

Johnny Gilbert, former Mexborough Town winger, made a clever wing run before pushing a neat through ball to Whittaker, and the inside right fired home from an acute angle.

There was nothing wrong with the Denaby approach so-far, but once in the lead they lost their sense of urgency and cohesion, and allowed Hull gradually to get back into the game.

Denaby held their one goal lead until late in the second half, but with a little more punch up front the margin could have been greater.

Hull, taking advantage of the relaxed Denaby approach, equalised with eight minutes of the game remaining. Slack Denaby marking allowed Foots to break down the right and Baxter prodded home his low centre,

Dazzling spell

Hull on their second half showing had earned the extra chance of 30 minutes of football, but, in a dazzling opening spell in the first period of extra time, Denaby crushed any victory notions that the Hull side may have entertained.

Inside left, Caunt, one Denaby player who could sever be faulted the for lack of endeavour, was the the first scorer. He rose well above the opposition to head home a corner from the right , Gilbert crowned a good display by scoring a third for Denaby, when he ended a spectacular run down the centre with a crisp low shot into the net.

Hull pulled one back pre Parkin scored from the penalty spot, after a Denaby defers had been penalised for handball
