Denaby Should Have Defeated Leaders

Hull Brunswick 4, Denaby United 1

It took Denaby United just a little too long to break into the big time at Hull Brunswick on Saturday. For the first half-hour United played like a second-class outfit and gave Brunswick just the age they needed for a 4 – 1 win which brought them their points total to 23 from a possible 24.

Once they leaned to the fact that Hull, albeit a strong, mobile and well marshalled side, were not infallible, then Denaby took a hold on the game and played some of their best soccer of the season.

It was a thundering 30 yards goal from Alan Cooper to make it 2 – 1 just before half-time which gave hope to a Denaby side which had seemed well beaten after first-half goals form Fraser in the 17th minute and Turner on the 26th minute.

After half-time it was Brunswick’s turn to take the licking and at least five times in the second half Denaby should have scored to take to valuable points from the league leaders with some full-blooded open play which was a sight to see.

Missed Opportunities

Alan Cooper in match-winning form, and centre forward Dick Barton, both incredibly missed point blank chances, goalkeeper Tather had a great game and was all that stood between Gary Smith and Ken. Launderers and two more “certain” goals which somehow failed to come off. Then just as it seemed the fat might be out of the fire, the morass of goal area mud took a hand and bogged down the Denaby defence for Ingram to push home a 75th minute corner. Five minutes later the mire held the ball to be tapped over the line, apparently by Robinson, after Gordon Smith failed to punch clear.

From a Denaby point of view it was a disappointing end to a match in which their form against possibility the best side they have met since their Midland league days, did them great credit.
