Fight-Back Earns Denaby Points.
Leeds Ashley Road 1, Denaby United 2.
Under atrocious conditions, in a game marred by hail and wind, Denaby United fought their way to a 2-1 Yorkshire League victory over a never-say-die Leeds Ashley Road side at Leeds on Saturday.
Leeds, a fast working, well-drilled team, took the lead in the 40th minute through AVEYARD, but after the interval Denaby pressed home the attack, with Williams getting the two vital goals, and with them two vital points.
WILLIAMS scored the first 15 minutes after half-time and Leeds were pushed on to the defensive. Briant Whant, playing an attacking game from right back, brought the ball up the wing, passed inside to Jolley, who gave Smith the chance of a rocket-like header that Aubrey in the Leeds goal did well to reach.
Great Goal.
Denaby’s defence was playing well against a fast Leeds forward line which was always dangerous. In the 80th minute a through ball from Roberts to WILLIAMS was perfectly placed over the ‘keeper into the net – a cool and sensible goal.
Caunt, at centre-forward, put in several good shots and brought some equally good saves from Aubrey.
Leeds never gave up. Like terriers they went after every ball and all but equalised.
Denaby must now let this team settle down. Williams was in the right spot at inside-left on Saturday, and with his experience and Caunt’s ability to shoot hard and quickly, Denaby could get the goals they need.
John Roberts, playing in his first game at right half, was impressive and the defence stood up coolly to a fast moving forward line.
Denaby United team: Collingwood; Whant, Cox; Roberts, Dalton, Collins; Joley, Smith; Caunt, Williams, Toyne.
