English Cup Re-Play.

Mexborough Town 1 Denaby United 0

The Cup-tie fever of the last 10 days in the Don Valley reached its height yesterday on the Wath Athletic ground, where Mexborough and Denaby met for the third time, and incidentally, broke their inter-club record, in their strenuous struggles for English Cup qualifying supremacy in Division 9.

There would be 2,000 spectators present when Lowe kicked off for Mexboro’. In the first minute Mexboro’ forced a corner, and Thompson had to save in a hurry. Ball and Hartley changed the venue, and Kelly drove in a fine low shot which Clarke did well to save. Thanks mainly to Kelly’s fine work at centre half Denaby continued to press and the “Colliers” forced & corner, but Clarke brought off marvellous save at the expense of another flagkick, from which a hot shot rattled the upright.

Mexboro’ several times worked good openings, only to make poor use of them Lowe being very weak in front of goal. Another corner to Denaby came to nothing, and again at the other end Lowe was badly at fault.

Half-time:—Mexboro’ Town, 0; Denaby United, 0.

The second half opened with Mexborough in lively mood, but centres from both wings game to nothing. Denaby got to the other end for Peters to force a fruitless comer, and then Mexborough put pressure, for Crossley to give the Town the lead ten minutes after the re-start.

Nothing daunted, Denaby raced down, and Ball shot behind. The goal had put fresh life into both teams, and Denaby inside a minute had two unexpected chances to score, and a couple of futile corners in quick succession. Later a fine cress from Burkinshaw saw Dyer shoot over the Denaby crossbar, and again the same winger crashed in a good shot, which Coalwood cleverly volleyed away. The game reflected great credit on both sides, and was sternly contested to the end, but Mexborough maintained their lead.

ResuIt:—Mexborough Town … 1 Denaby United .
