Denaby Changes make Little Difference
Notts County Reserves 5 Denaby United 1
Denaby United suffered their third league defeat when visiting Notts County Reserves who the previous Thursday defeated Mexborough 6-2.
The ground was very muddy and Denaby were unable to make any headway until the second half, and improved considerably. Notts fielded a strong side which included Chandler, the former Leicester forward, Rankin, a former Chelsea inside right and Walker, their latest capture from Scotland, at centre half.
Denaby fielded a reorganised team and included a new goalkeeper in Wilson, from the Sheffield District. Considering that Wilson was making his debut in this class of football, he did exceedingly well, making many fine saves, including one from a penalty. Clark and Sykes showed a big improvement on their Scunthorpe form. Smith was not as effective as usual and on the other flank Beadman received a crack on the knee and was unable to play his usual game. Fearnley and Guest played well with Hewitt a capable partner for the latter. Fleetwood hung back to far. Bloomfield did very well under the circumstances but the heavy ground was against him.
Soon in Arrears
The home team made the first attack but Chandler shot wide. After three minutes Notts were one up. Clarke was beaten by Hoult, who made an opening for Rickards who scored with a shot which beat Wilson all the way.
Hoult started another attack and presented Rickards with a good opening, but Leek came to rescue. Denaby managed to break away, Guess making a tricky run, but he was stopped by Julian.
Notts returned to the attack but Wilson’s point-blank saved from Rankin and Hoult. After 20 minutes Notts rather luckily increase their lead. Chandler sent in a hard drive which struck the upright and Rickards met the rebound and scored.
Fearnley got going on the Denaby right and twice struck the post, and Bloomfield headed onto the bar from one of his centres.
From the clearance Notts attacked and Chandler scored. Just before the interval Notts were awarded a penalty for a foul on Hoult. Rickard took the kick but Wilson brought of a good save.
On resuming Denaby gave an improved display, but their forwards played too close in front of goal. More steadiness would have brought goals. Notts had to fall onto the defensive were beaten 10 minutes from the end by Hewitt.
Denaby pegged away but failed to add to their score, and before the end their hopes were shattered when Notts added further goals through Hoult and Chandler.
