Goalkeepers in Top Form in Utd. – Town Clash at Retford.

Retford Town Res. 2, Denaby United 2.

Not at their best on Saturday, Denaby United still managed to take a valuable point from Retford Town in a Yorkshire League game that provided thrills – and spills.

In a game played at breakneck pace like this, it is a wonder that the scoreline wasn’t considerably bigger; but you can blame poor finishing from both sides and sterling work from goalkeepers Collingwood and Palmer for that.

The poor finishing may have been frustrating, but the goals that were scored were picture-book efforts. Denaby took the lead in the tenth minute through jack-of-all-trades COLLINS. Now in defence, now plugging away in attack, the left-half rose to head a Toyne corner into the net off the underside of the bar.

That early goal before the Retford pitch became bogged down in mud, was worth three under normal conditions. It was the only first half goal, although Retford centre-forward Farmer thought he had the equaliser five minutes from half-time but was ruled offside

Real ‘Long-Shot.’

The equaliser did come, however – quite literally a ‘long shot’ that must have surprised even OXLEY as it bounced awkwardly from 30 yards and screwed past the mud-bound Collingwood.

The pressure was on United. Passes started going badly astray and in the 62nd minute TWIGG gave Retford the lead.

Not for long, as centre-forward. Caunt lifted a perfect pass through the Retford defence to JOLLEY, who took a well served goal.

Denaby did well to hold out for the rest of the game and it was a relief when the final whistle was blown.
