Roundel v. Denaby
This fixture was originally arranged to be played at Darnall, but owing to the ground being taken over by a builder, Roundel were compelled at short notice to seek the use of the ground at Wath, following another match.
Play opened at a fast pace, with both sides attacking in turn. A sustained bombardment of Priestley’s goal followed, shot after shot being driven in, but Sheldrake relieved the pressure with a well-timed clearance. Roundel continued to press, and Nelson scored after about thirty minutes’ play.
Denaby responded with renewed effort and troubled the home defence considerably, but were unable to break through, and Roundel led at the interval. On the resumption, Roundel again took control, and after a series of exchanges Priestley regained possession. Roger then passed accurately to Nelson, who scored a second goal within five minutes.
A further chance arose when Nelson again threatened, though Priestley cleared weakly. A melee followed in the goalmouth, during which the goalkeeper failed to secure the ball, and Rushworth forced it out. A penalty was awarded, but Haines made a poor attempt, sending the ball directly into Priestley’s hands.
From a subsequent scramble in front of goal, Roger worked his way through and scored a third goal. The pace of the game slackened somewhat after the interval, and Denaby found themselves unable to overcome a resolute home defence. It should be noted, however, that they were handicapped by Sheldrake sustaining an injury, which limited their effectiveness.
Result:
Roundel – 3 goals
Denaby – 0 goals
