Denaby Lose After Fighting Back
Scunthorpe 4, Denaby 2
An extra spurt might have saved Denaby a point at Scunthorpe, for after being two goals in arrears at the interval they rallied to get on terms early in the second half but failed to keep their opponents at bay subsequently.
Denaby made several changes. Smith at left back did well in his unaccustomed position. Carte, the Conanby centre-half who last season played with Goldthorpe, came out of the ordeal with credit. Crossley, injured at Mexboro’, was unable to turn out at the last minute, his place being taken by Guest, the young inside-left. Once again Astle was a hero in the Denaby goal, while Buranks also did finely and did some useful work in the home goal, saving the situation several times, while Cross and Roberts were sound backs. Nicholson and Barkley were the best half-backs, and Barley, Pattison and Lax were the pick of the forwards.
For 13 minutes Denaby were on the defensive and Astle made several fine saves. Denaby’s first attack was repulsed and Scunthorpe scored through Fenwick. After 18 minutes Scunthorpe added another goal, Lax being the scorer. Denaby’s forward line lacked punch and were unable to break through a reliable defence until near the interval.
Their second dangerous attack ended in Parden shooting wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. Only a minute before the interval Cross tried to throw the Denaby forwards offside but failed and “Newman” reduced the lead. Denaby’s goal put new life into the attack, for on resuming they attacked in force and during one attack Young was injured. Scunthorpe made several raids before Huck equalised.
Later Cross converted a penalty for hands for Scunthorpe and in the last minute Pattison put the issue beyond doubt.
