Double Blow to Denaby

Scunthorpe United  3 Denaby United 1

Denaby’s visit to Scunthorpe yesterday was unfortunate in more ways than one, for in addition to losing 3 – 1 they had Jack Barrow (picture), their clever right half-back, rather seriously injured. He sustained a hard knock in the first half and though he pluckily carried on to the interval he did not resume in the second half as it was thought his collar bone was fractured.

Denaby were not so inferior to their opponents as the score suggests, and had they taken their chances they would have drawn at least.

Haggar missed two splendid opportunities, and Walker was also to blame in this respect. Green, a new player who was tried at centre-forward, gave a promising display in addition to scoring Denaby’s only goal, but Gale and Mountney were the outstanding players for the visitors. Both defended finely.

TUCKER gave Scunthorpe the lead and HUBBARD increased their advantage. GREEN replying for Denaby before the interval. CHAPMAN put on a third goal for Scunthorpe in the second half when Denaby had a fair share of the game in spite of their being a man short.

Denaby’s probable team for the away game with Doncaster to-morrow is: Gale; Taylor, Mountney; Robinson, King, Smith; Siddall, Black, Green, Walker, Haggar.

Another Second-Half Lapse

Grantham 3, Mexboro’ 0

After holding their own in the first half in which there was no score, Mexboro’ fell away after the interval and lost a somewhat unsatisfactory game by 3 – 0.

The backs, Woodhouse and Haigh, played quite well but the halves had an off day and too much work was thrown on the rear line. White had not a great deal to do in the Mexboro’ goal but might have prevented the second goal.

Clarke was Mexboro’s outstanding forward. Glasper played much clever football but was at fault in holding the ball too long.

Grantham, two of whose goals were scored by HEMP, the old Notts. County player, missed a penalty in the first half.

Mexboro’s team to meet Rawmarsh in the semi-final of the Sheffield Senior Cup tomorrow will be: Armitage; Haigh, Woodhouse; Moxon, Alderman, Perry; Clarke, Fisher, McMahon, Glasper, Bolan.
