Seth King of Denaby United

Seth King, now of Denaby United but better known as a member of Sheffield United’s F.A. Cup winning side of 1925, is one of the most versatile players ever developed by South Yorkshire junior football.
While at Bramall Lane he played in practically every position except goal for Sheffield United. A member of a well-known Penistone family, Seth started his football career with Penistone St. John’s. It was while playing with this club that he attracted the attention of Huddersfield, with the result that he subsequently played with them as an amateur for part of the 1919 season, his position then being centre-forward.
At the end of the season he went to Sheffield United, for whom he rendered splendid service for almost ten years, gaining an F.A. Cup medal when the club met and beat Cardiff City at Wembley by a goal scored by Fred Tunstall. He also figured in the Sheffield United team which reached the semi-final of the competition, only to be beaten by Huddersfield in 1928.
He moved to Oldham in 1929 where, as centre-half and captain, he nearly piloted the team into the First Division in his first season, promotion being missed by the narrow margin of a point. After playing two full seasons without missing a game, and making several appearances in a third season (nearly 100 games in all), Seth severed his connection with the Lancashire club and joined Denaby last season, taking them straight away into the first round proper of the F.A. Cup, where they fell by the narrow margin of one goal at Carlisle.
He manages to keep fit and find time for his football, though, as landlord of the Castle Inn, Hillsboro’, he has now affairs of his own to attend to.
Still a shrewd constructive player, Seth is a grand captain and there has been a marked improvement at Tickhill Square since his services were secured by Mr. Percy Harrison.
