United Keep Up Running.
Sheffield Club 1, Denaby United 2.
Shovel up the thick layer of mud from the Abbeydale, Sheffield, pitch and turn it into gold, and there you have the measure of Denaby United’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield Club in the Yorkshire League.
The previous week’s 15-0 scoreline was much more impressive, to casual glance than this meagre one. But no victory will be more valuable than this over one of the most difficult teams in the whole of the Yorkshire League.
On a good surface the match would have been superb. Because of the mud it was only good. There were a few too many mistakes and niggling fouls for it to be any other.
Denaby looked brim full of confidence in the first half after a first minute Toyne shot was just touched round the post by Wolstenholme.
Well-Deserved Lead.
It was another 25 minutes before JOLLEY turned expectation into fact with a fine first-time shot to give United a well-deserved lead, a lead they did not deserve to lose as Whant, aiming a back-pass to Collingwood, unwittingly gave it to Sheffield’s COOPER instead five minutes after half-time.
Now Sheffield pulled out the stops. But hampered by a hesitant defence – Hinsley and Vickers rarely had the measure of Toyne and Jolley – their efforts came to nothing. Five minutes after the equaliser, the here-there-and-everywhere HALL went through a crowded defence on to Jolley’s pass.
Deservedly Denaby scrambled home to win, somewhat shaken by a last minute Bidwell hot that beat Collingwood and hit the bar,
