Sheffield Independent – Tuesday 19 January 1909

Sheffield United Res. 4 Denaby United 1

This match, postponed from Saturday owing to the English Cup tie, was played at Bramall lane yesterday afternoon, before a very fair gate.

Denaby won the toss, and had the assistance of the breeze, but the opening exchanges were in favour of the United, Tayles making several fine saves.

At length Denaby improved, and E. Westwood scored for them when the game had been in progress about twenty minutes.

Five minutes later Gallimore sent in a terrific centre, and one of the visitors’ defenders in trying head away turned the ball into his own goal. Just on the interval Kitchen took the ball up cleverly and passed to Simmons, who walked the ball through whilst Denaby were appealing for offside.

Thus the home team led at half-time by two goals to one.

In the second half Tayles stopped number of fine shots, and Mellors was at times busy. With little over a quarter of hour to go Thompson put the home team further ahead during a scrimmage in the goal mouth, and two minutes later Gallimore put on fourth goal with a smart 1 header, Tayles getting both bands to the ball, but failing to hold it.
