Denaby’s Gallant Effort

Sheffield Wednesday Reserve  2  Denaby United  2

Denaby deserved hearty commendation for the gallant fight they put up on Saturday on the Owlerton ground, with whom they managed to draw, mainly by virtue of a belated goal from Pattison, who snatched the game out of the fire in the closing stages.

This represents Denaby’s first drawn game, and also their first away point. They had struck a bad patch so far as away matters were concerned, and with dropping points occasionally at home they have not, so far, made satisfactory progress.

At present they stand fifth from the bottom, and some of their performances in the field this year, notably against Notts Forest reserve, and been value for a much better position. The secret of their failure as Lane largely in the somewhat disorganised state of the team, and a weakness in the defence. They have a rattling good goalkeeper, but neither of the backs is either fast enough or short enough to meet some of the hot forward lines which are to be found in the Midland League.

Dogged Determination

On Saturday, however, they managed to hold their Owlerton, which is a very creditable performance for any team in the league, not accepting Chesterfield and Rotherham County, and they did so by the exercise of the same dogged determination with which they opposed Chesterfield the previous week, while the forwards exhibited a better understanding, and the rough state of the ground seem to suit Denaby’s style of play better.
