Denaby Utd – Shefield Wed Res 3 Denaby 0

October 1903

Mexborough & Swinton Times — Friday 10 April 1903

Sheffield Wednesday Res. v. Denaby United.

These teams met at Owlerton on Saturday. Denaby pressed at the start, but were soon driven back, and the visiting goal had a very narrow escape, the ball cannoning out off a defender, when a goal appeared certain, which later Tayles saved neatly from Bartlett.

The Denaby custodian was now kept very busy, but most of the shots had little sting in them. The Denaby left, getting possession, raced away, but was smartly pulled up by Stacey.

Once Marrison missed a glorious opportunity, shooting very tamely, with only Tayles to test. Once Tayles was lucky to stop a splendid ground shot from Stewart. A minute later Wednesday were awarded a penalty. Durkin hanging within the limit. Stewart took the kick, but the ball cannoned back off Tayles, and the danger was cleared.

Marrison next sent in a lightning shot, which struck the cross-bar, the goalkeeper being helpless.

As half-time drew near the Wednesday men redoubled their efforts, and following a bully in front of the Denaby goal, Simmons sent the ball in. Tayles quickly scooped it out again, but the referee awarded a goal to Wednesday, evidently being under the impression that the ball was over the line.

The interval arrived with the score 1–0.

On resuming, Wednesday once more showed their superiority, and the Denaby defenders were kept very busy. The visitors’ goal had several miraculous escapes, a splendid shot from Stewart cannoning back off the post.

Once or twice the Denaby forwards broke away, but the Wednesday defence were more than able to deal with the assaults. Once Stubbs had to handle from Borg, but he had no difficulty in getting rid of the shot.
