United Almost Bring Off Stockton Shock

Stockton 2, Denaby United, 1

After their triumph the week before over the leaders Ashington, Denaby came within an ace of providing another shock Midland League win on Saturday.

In the closing stages of a keenly fought game against the Teesside amateurs, they threw everything into attack and had the home defence thoroughly rattled.

Luck had been with Denaby in the first half but now it swung back to Stockton’s favour as Shaw and company made an all-out bid to wipe out a one-goal deficit. There was a deceptive left-foot shot from Guest which beat goalkeeper Ditchburn only to flash narrowly outside the upright.  Then centre-half Johnson put in a header from Sapey’s corner kick, only for Kirk to clear off the touchline at the expense of another corner.

Extraordinary Misses

Most of the excitement in fact was crammed into the last 20 minutes or so, and for most of the first half it was Stockton who dominated the play.

Two extraordinary misses by their outside right Monkhouse in the first five minutes rather set the pattern for the rest of the game, for there were plenty of chances later which went begging.

Making full use of their strong and speedy wingers, Monkhouse and Moody, Stockton, found it none too difficult to prise open the Denaby defence and they deservedly went ahead after 24 minutes through centre-forward Cockerill.

The miss of the match came ten minutes after the interval. As Sapey pulled the ball back from the goal-line Shaw neatly “sold the dummy” to leave Guest with an open goal but the inside right shot over

In the 72nd minute Shaw showed his former Rotherham skipper how it should be done with a splendid left foot shot which brought the equaliser. Almost from the kick off, however, Stockton regained the lead through inside-left Brown and held onto the end to make sure of the points.
