A Brilliant Defence
Denaby Take a Point at Sutton

Sutton Town 3, Denaby United 3

Denaby United are attractive visitors to Sutton and generally take away a point. Saturday’s match was the keenest seen on the grounds for some time. The players deserve great credit for playing such football on a bad ground.

Denaby early got the lead, and before the interval were ahead by three goals to one.

The first of the Denaby goals was a gift, Shaw appearing to think the ball had gone over the touchline, making no attempt to save. The second and third goals were good ones.

After the change of ends Sutton exerted pressure, and had it not been for the brilliance of Bromage, supported by two fine backs, Sutton would have won. Bromage had many more shots to stop then had Shaw, and many times he went down in the mud to stop apparently certain goals. Too much praise cannot be given the Denaby backs. It is a long time since a pair of Midland league defenders gave such a sterling display as Wheelhouse and Bisby gave on Saturday. Wheelhouse is particularly robust, and gets the ball nearly every time. Bisby gave a wonderful exhibition. His methods were clean, his tackling well timed and his kicking resolute. He should have a big future. Among the forwards those who impressed most were Skeels and Fred Brown.

Sutton did not play up to their usual standard. The heavy ground hampered them more than it did Denaby. Billy Hand, formerly of Crystal Palace, was a hard worker and the prime mover in every attack. Slack, Terry and Freeman were clever defenders.

Allen started the scoring, and Fawden soon made Denaby two up. Terry reduced this lead. Fred Brown, restored it before the interval.

There was no more scoring until the last two minutes of the game, when Sutton’s strenuous efforts were at last rewarded. Goals by Ransford and Brooks caused a thrilling finish. Teams:
