Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 10 March 1902
Thornhill 0 Denaby United 1
The attendance was rather thin when these teams met at the Thornhill ground. Twice in the first half hour the Thornhill goal was in jeopardy, a very fine shot by Neal all but beating the custodian. An unproductive corner followed, then midfield play ensued, and a dangerous scrimmage in the mouth the home goal was without result.
By means of clever manoeuvring the right wing of Thornhill, the Denaby backs were found work, and their citadel almost; reduced. The visitors soon became aggressive and a furious attack was successfully repulsed. The play became much more animated, but half-time came with neither side having advantage.
Resuming after the interval, Bennett broke away, and made a grand attempt to score, but the Denaby goalkeeoer effected a fine save.
A good opportunity of scoring was afforded Thornhill and clumsily dealt with.
McNeal, of Denaby, managed to secure the only point scored in the game.
