Worksop Lose Valuable Point

Worksop Town  0  Denaby United  0

In view of the efforts that are being made to revive the fortunes of the Worksop football club, it was necessary that the team should make some attempts to improve their poor position.

The visit of Denaby who have been given away goals by the handful, gave them an excellent opportunity of securing their first victory of 1912. Instead of doing so, however, they give a display that disgusted everyone of the onlookers, and lost an extremely valuable point. The whole blame for this unexpectedly disappointing result lies at the door of the forwards, who were attacking all the afternoon, but could not find a shot good enough to beat Marshall.

Denaby’s new goalkeeper was undoubtedly the outstanding figure of the game, but only one of the many shots directed at him deserved to score. Denaby deserved to win, if only for the business like way in which they attacked the home goal. Luckily the Worksop defence was in good form and they also were prevented from scoring.

Scott, Ellis, Kirk, Bale and Thomas (Worksop) and Marshall, Swinborne, Dawson and Peters (Denaby) were the only player is worthy of mention in a very poor game.

Mexborough’s Win

Mexborough Town  1  Gainsborough Trinity  0

The value of a good start was demonstrated at Mexborough, where the only goal of the game fell to the Town team in the first minutes play. Connelley was the scorer, and though subsequently the home team had several opportunities for going further ahead, the stout defence of Gainsborough Trinity prevailed.

Odell, indeed, put up an extremely clever display of goalkeeping, one saving a penalty from Murray in brilliant fashion. On the all the game was well contested, but considering the amount of pressure at times applied by Mexborough, the home forwards should have certainly done better.

Trinity were a good, hard-working side, with attack that could never get the mastery of the home defence.
