The Fifth
Denaby down at York

York 2, Denaby 1

Denaby on Saturday lost their fifth consecutive Midland league match – and it was also their fifth consecutive match away from Denaby.

At York they were up against a better side, and a much better one than they tackled at Tickhill square on October 11. The going was hot, however, and Denaby gave York a keen contest. The defence was again the strongest part of the team, the attack still been unsettled and patchy. Walter Wadsworth was one of the liveliest members of the side. Middlemass and Duckham scored for York.

Then an unhappy incident spoiled the game. Apparently from a charge which referee Brown, of Rotherham, considered to merit such as a punishment, Midlemass was sent off the field, and after that Mace scored Denaby’s only goal.

At the close of the match the crowd swarmed on the field and the referee was threatened before he got to the dressing room. Directors of the club did all they could and the crowd was ultimately dispersed. It was a regrettable affair to occur on a ground where the officials are very careful to preserve dignity and receive visitors in a sportsmanlike way.
