Denaby Win the Montagu Cup.
Presentation of Cup and Medals.
After the match the cup and medals were presented by Col. the Hon. H. Lindley Wood, of Melton Park.
Col. Wood arrived during the early portion of the game, and he had a cordial reception. He was accommodated with a seat on the grand stand near the Charity Cup which, with its glass case had been brought on the ground.
Among those present were Mr. J. Nolan, the President of the Hospital Cup committee, and the following members of the committee:
Mr. F. Green (treasurer): Mr. J. Peters (hon. secretary). Mr A. Brunt. Mr. S. Allerton. Mr. A. Gibson, Mt. E. Mountford, Mr. S. Johnson and Mr. J. Wingfield and Mr. C. Schofield, a member of thr Hospital Management Committee.
Mr. Nolan briefly introduced Col. Wood, and took the opportunity to say that though he was independent in regard to either team his belief was that the best team had won. (Applause.)
Col. Wood had a rousing reception and said it gave him very great pleasure indeed to present the cup and medals. He had been there for the last hour, and had been enormously interested in the game. He did not know very much of football but he knew he intended to come again. (Hear, hear.)
In the course of further remarks. Col. Wood spoke of “this excellent competition.” and in presenting the cup to Captain Lesley, of the Denaby team, said: “l am quite sure you have thoroughly earned it.”
Col. Wood afterwards, presented the medals to the winners and runners up, making a complimentary remark to each one, and especially those who had scored goals He was also interested to learn that Tim Roper, one of the Denaby players had seen active service in South Africa, and he questioned Roper as to his regiment.
On the proposition of Mr. C. Schofield, seconded by Mr. W. Wright (the treasurer the club) a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Col. Wood.
