Denabys Father’s Anger.
Assaulted His Daughter’s Sweetheart.
Too Young For Courting At Fifteen.
To-day, Doncaster, William Isaac Gibbs, innkeeper, New Conisborough, Denaby, was summoned by Arthur Pampling, pawnbroker’s assistant, Denaby, for assault.
Arthur Pampling said he was 20 yean of age, and was with Messrs. Wray and pawnbrokers. On Friday, the 20th August, he was in the shop when defendant went in and asked him if he was walking out with his daughter. He said βYes.” Defendant said, “Are you aware she is not 16 years of age?” He replied, “Yes.” Then, said the complainant, he called me a —– dirty dog and said ” If I see you speaking to her again I will horse whip you within inch your life.”
When left the shop that night he was met by the defendant, who asked him apologise, and replied that he would if there was anything to apologise for. Defendant then struck him on the with his fist, and taking bold him by the neck tried to throw him into the ditch, saying, ” That’s the best place for a β cur like you.β
Cross-examined complainant denied that he had taken the girl out for walks at nights. He had walked out with her on Thursday afternoon and in the evening, but always left before eight o’clock night.
Mr. Baddiley, behalf the defendant, contended that had done what any father who cared for his child would do, and that the assault, which hr never denied, was justified.
Mr. Yarborough (Chairman) said the magistrates thought defendant had right to protect his daughter, but did not think had right to take the law into his own hands the way had done. He must pay the costs.
