Denaby’s Yorkshire Council Debut.

Although Denaby tried for top place in the Doncaster and District League table last season, they are not relying solely on their old team to carry them through their first mason in the Yorkshire Council. and the services of a number of new players have been obtained.

Among them are J. Greig , from Mexborough, J. White, from Tickhill, H. Shoesmith, from Berkshire County, and E. Tibbles, from Buckinghamshire. J. Creasey, the Denaby footballer, “Pal” Hobson, from Mexborough, and Carruthers, a left hand bowler, with a good reputation, who hails from Carlisle.

White and Grieg are batsmen, and the latter is also a useful change bowler. Creasey is a fast bowler, of whom a lot is expected. All last year’s player will be available with the exception of Mr. H. W. Smith (ex-president of the club), who has taken up a position in the Castleford district.

The ground has been considerably improved during the last two years, and it is now a credit to the whole district. Few colliery villages in the county possess so excellent an enclosure, nor one of which more use is made of. During the present close season about £250 has been expended on ground improvements, and since the war something like £1,000 has been laid out on the cricket pitch, the tennis courts, and bowling greens, and upon the provision of better facilities both for players and spectators. The ground is now practically level.

The present deficit is £400, which the club hopes to liquidate this year, and commence the erection of a large club house between the cricket and football grounds, giving stand accommodation for both. The deficit is not considered to constitute a heavy burden, for there is a great deal of enthusiasm in the club, the membership of which totals 600, a figure it is hoped to raise to 1,000 before this season is out.

Without doubt Denaby will start the season in this higher division of cricket confident and well equipped. The ground is now open for practice, and a trial match has been arranged for next Saturday. The second team, which last reason competed in the second division of the Doncaster and District League, has this season taken the senior team’s place in the first division.
