Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 03 February 1893
That was a sad case of Denaby which was tried at Doncaster last Saturday. It showed a deplorable state of morals.
In the first place, surely it is unreasonable for a child of the tender age of 14 to be kept “up” as servant until close upon midnight, according to the statement by the prosecutrix, and when she has retired to rest, is it not desirable that she should be undisturbed?
This she declared she was not allowed to do, and Doctor Twigg’s testimony was corroborative of the sorry tale delivered by the child.
The little one was cross-examined at length as to why she had not “told” certain persons as to what had happened. The reply was that when she did complain, all the sympathy she got was “a laugh,” until her mother was made aware of the circumstances.
We shall learn more about the matter at the Quarter Sessions or Assizes.
