Deputy Rescued in Pit after 5 hours

DEPUTY RESCUED IN PIT

A Denaby deputy  was missing underground for five hours on Wednesday and rescue teams combing the old workings at the pit eventually found him unconscious from the effects of gas.

He was 47 years old Williams Taylor of 505 Canklow road Rotherham who was taken to Doncaster Gate Hospital, Rotherham.

His conditions yesterday was described as satisfactory and a hospital spokesman said he would probably be sent home this weekend.

The colliery manager Desmond McTighe and an overman Mr Basil Woodward, aged 39 of Windmill Avenue Conisbrough went in search of Mr Taylor when he was reported missing at 11 am but they were forced out of old workings in the Haigh Moor Seam by gas.

Later rescue teams from Rotherham and Doncaster joined the search using breathing apparatus eventually located deputy.
