Dinner and Social At Denaby.
Cadeby Main 1 Denaby Main 0
The return football match promoted by the surfaceman of the Denaby and Cadeby collieries was played on Saturday on the Conisborough Town ground.
Considerable interest has been excited in the contest amongst the employees of the respective collieries, but in both matches the result has been in favour of Cadeby, Denaby not having scored. In the initial match, which was played at Denaby a few weeks ago, the game ended with four goals in favour of Cadeby, to Denaby nil; but on that occasion the former had certainly the best and strongest team, and practically had the game all their own way. Since then however, the Denaby team had undergone careful training, and had become re-constructed, in order, if possible, to efface the blot which had been administered upon them.
Denaby won the toss, and kicked downhill. Give-and-take play ensued until 25 minutes after starting, when Cadeby got possession, and, owing to the visitors back misjudging the ball, the home team had no difficulty in scoring the first and only goal.
A stoppage was then caused through the bursting of the ball and there being no other available for some considerable time.
In the second half, Denaby had the best of the game, and several times ought to have scored, but were unable to get through.
Results: Cadeby one, Denaby zero,
Teams: –
Denaby: goal, E. Smith; backs, H. Nicholson, Ed. Dack: halfbacks, J. Good, H. Nettleship, John Rose; forwards, E. Wainwright, George Colley, George Holmes, A. Beckitt, T. Wilson.
Cadeby: goal, Donnelly; backs, T. Mitchell, F. Tomlinson; halfbacks, J. Mitchell, F. Singleton, A. Barlow; forwards, B. Boyes, Percy Rich, J. Darby T. Martin, and G. Harrison.
After the match the players and friends, to the number of 50, adjourned to the Eagle and Child Hotel, where a sumptuous dinner had been prepared by the host and hostess in their best and well-known style. The after proceedings were of a lively and enjoyable character. Mr Joseph Johnson (Denaby) was voted to the chair, and songs, recitations, speeches, etc. were given by Mr H. Nettleship, Mr C. Lindsay, Mr Boyes, Mr A. Barlowe, and Mr G. Harrison.
