Dog Racing at Conisbrough Brings a Storm of Protest

The introduction of greyhound racing in Minneymoor Field, Conisbrough, on Friday and Saturday has drawn a storm of protest this week from residents in the vicinity. A petition against the meetings is now being circulated in the district for submission to Conisbrough Urban Council. It is being widely signed

Residential District

The field, which adjoins the main Conisbrough – Doncaster Road, is situated in the vicinity of Conisbrough’s principal residential district.

The first meeting, sponsored by Conisbrough and Denaby Agricultural Society with the object of clearing losses incurred at this year’s Conisbrough Agricultural  Show, drew a 350 crowd last weekend, with many people having a view from the main road.

Mr G.R.Hill,  127, Doncaster Road, Conisbrough, who lives opposite the field told a South Yorkshire Times reporter yesterday that the people in the district were up in arms about the whole business. They complain that children were unable to sleep because of the noise of the dogs.

One Conisbrough Council, the “Times” learns, as been “inundated with complaints.”

Councils Move

The Urban Council’s Highways Committee have received a report in connection with the greyhound racing now taking place in the district and the Council have approved a Committee recommendation that the clerk (Mr R.W Birch) be authorised to take such action as he did may need deem necessary on behalf of the Authority.

The next meetings take place tonight and tomorrow morning. The meetings are being arranged for successive weekends and under the present licence they remain for further meeting – two weekends – after this weekend.
