Domestic Servant’s Theft.

Rose Irene Sutton, described as domestic servant, late of Conisborough was at the Doncaster West Riding Court to-day charged with stealing a number articles of clothing, value 50s. belonging to Mary Challoner, maid at the Fox Conisborough, between 12th and June.

There was further charge against the prisoner of stealing an 18-carat ring, value £4, belonging Mrs. Janet Lugar, landlady of the Fox Inn.

Prisoner was employed as chambermaid at the Fox Inn, and after she left on the 19th Challoner missed the articles. Information was given the police, and part of the clothing was found at 60, Doncaster Road, Denaby, where prisoner had been staying. A warrant was issued for prisoner’s apprehension, and on Thursday prisoner was apprehended at Bridgetown.

When charged by Police-constable Kay, she said. “I got some of them, but I am not to blame.” Prisoner now alleged that Challoner told her to pack the things up.

In the second case Mrs. Lugar said that from the 7th the 19th prisoner was employed as kitchen maid at her house, and the ring produced was kept in a box in her bedroom. She missed the ring before prisoner left on the 19th. She dismissed the prisoner, giving her a month’s wages in lieu of notice. The other girl was leaving.

Police-constable Kay, who received the prisoner from the Staffordshire County Police, said the ring was in her possession. She was charged with stealing the ring from Mrs. Lugar’s bedroom and her reply was that she got it from the shelf the dresser, but did not know who it belonged to.

There was a previous conviction against prisoner in Staffordshire last year, and she was committed prison for 28 days—14 days in each case
