A Denaby collier named Daniel Pease applied for permission to take a child from the house to assist him in his work, but the Chairman addressed him thus:
“We cannot bind a boy to work with you in the pit. We did it once, and it failed signally. We got beyond the law then, and we decline to do it again.”
