Doncaster Merry Making Party.
At the Doncaster West Riding Court, yesterday, Frank W. Ridgway, collier, Conisborough, was charged with unlawfully wounding George Ward, miner, 18, Taylor Street, Conisborough, on Saturday night.
Complainant stated that on going to 2, Kents Yard with George Arthur Glew, to visit some friends, he saw defendant, who made an accusation against him concerning his wife. Defendant challenged him to fight, but he refused, and returning to the house shortly after, defendant opened the door and struck him violent blow under the left eye with a bottle, causing a severe wound. He was knocked senseless for time.
Dr. McClare said the sight of the eye was not injured.
Defendant said went to the house his mother-in-law where some “merrymaking’ was going on over son who had come back from Germany. Whilst there complainant and another man arrived with two cases bottled beer. Words followed about his wife, and defendant admitted striking the complainant with stick, but denied the bottle attack.
The Magistrates in reducing the charge to common assault, said defendant had right take the law into his own hands, and imposed a fine of 20s.
