Drunk at Denaby
Fred Fordam and Joseph Whitaker, of Denaby were summoned for having been drunk on the highway at Denaby on the 1st inst.
Police-constable Spivey, the officer stationed at Denaby Main Colliery, stated that about twelve o’clock midnight on the inst. he was on duty in the colliery yard when he heard a disturbance outside. He saw the two defendant, who were in a drunken condition and using bad language. Witness had great difficulty in getting them away.
Fordam pleaded guilty, and gave evidence as to the sobriety of his companion. He had been te Whitaker’s house on business matters. Unfortunately he (Fordam) had had too much drink, and he therefore asked Whittaker to see him over the crossing. Whitaker was sober.
Mr. Chambers did not think Fordom was a very good witness for Whittaker, having admitted that he himself was drunk.
Being in that state he could not be a very good judge of other people’s condition.
The magistrates fined the defendants 3s. and coats each.
