Drunkenness
Mexborough and Swinton Times August 14, 1885
Frank Shaw, labourer, Conisborough, was summoned for being drunk on the highway on the 29th ult. PC Kendall stated that on the day in question he found the defendant on Doncaster Road, helplessly drunk. He was lying with his feet across the ‘ruts’ in the road.
Defendant did not appear, and a fine of 10 shillings and 12s 6d costs was imposed.
Mexborough and Swinton Times August 28, 1885
Emma Hawksworth, married woman of Conisborough, was charged with being drunk and disorderly on the previous night.
Sgt Calcraft stated that on Monday night, at a 6:45, your scored out of the station he heard a disturbance in Station Lane. He went, and found the prisoner there very drunk and using filthy language.
Yet seen previously an adviser to go home. She refused to go home, and he locked up.
Police Constable Lovock gave corroborative evidence and the prisoner was fined 2s 6d and 8s 1d costs or in default seven days to prison
