Echoes of the Late Denaby and Cadeby Strike
Judgment Summonses
At the Doncaster West Riding Police Court, on Saturday, Wm. Whittaker, of Denaby, was the defendant in a judgment summons issued by the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries, Limited, to secure £6 11s. damages awarded to the company in 1902, for absenting himself from work without leave.
Mr. W. M. Gichard said the defendant had not paid anything. The magistrates made an order against the defendant on the 27th September, 1902, to pay £6 damages and costs. The defendant was now earning 27s. 6d. per week.
Mr. Leng, clerk at the Court, produced the register, and said nothing had been paid.
Mr. A. H. Barnard (agent) also gave evidence.
The Bench made an order that the defendant be committed for one month, this to be suspended as long as he regularly paid 5s. a week.
William F. Rodgers, of Conisboro’, was the defendant in a similar case, and he pleaded guilty. He said he had not earned very much, and was in poor circumstances.
The Bench made a similar order as in the previous case.
Wm. Walters, of Swinton, was summoned similarly.
The order in this instance was made on the 19th July, 1902.
Defendant said he did not work at the colliery in 1902, but did so in 1901. He produced a letter from his employer, who he worked for at that time.
The case was adjourned for a week, Mr. Gichard stating that if they had brought the wrong man, he would see he lost nothing by it.
Enquiries would be made.
