Education at Conisboro’.

Isaac Prosser, a Conisboro’ miner, who has been a soldier, was summoned at the instance of the Conisboro’ School Board for neglecting to send his child to school.

The defendant produced a doctor’s note to certify that his wife was very ill, and had been so for two or three years.

The defendant said his daughter was 13 years of age, and he kept her at home to look after his wife. He sent her to school when he could.

The Chairman was understood to say that the Bench were of opinion that the case ought never to have been brought. Although they were bound to convict, they were not bound to allow costs.

The defendant would have to pay 6d., and the School Board would have to pay their own costs.

Tom Taylor, a Conisboro’ pitman, was ordered to pay 5s. 6d. for a similar offence.
