Education Committee
Mr. H. Gomersall presided at the monthly meeting of the Education Sub-Committee when, in reply to a recommendation of the committee regarding a married woman teacher at Denaby Main, a communication was received from the county authority stating that they did not consider the termination of the teacher’s agreement would be justified and it had been decided to retain her until October, 1935, when the position might be reviewed again.
The Rev. W. J. T. Pascoe remarked that this was a serious thing when they had people coming out of college with no jobs to go to.
He moved that the communication be received with regret, and this was carried.
It was reported that the following tenders had been accepted: Messrs. Hilton and Hilton, repairs to piano at Denaby Main Infants’ School, £8; Newton Chambers Ltd., alteration of heating apparatus at Denaby Main School, £66 15s. 3d.; Mr. George Senior, Conisborough, providing and fixing new stoves at Balby Street Senior Mixed School, £17 10s.
Mr. F. Mason, headmaster of the Balby Street Senior School, wrote drawing the attention of the committee to the unsatisfactory lighting at his school. He asked whether the gas lights could be replaced by electricity and it was decided to recommend that electricity should be installed.
The appointment of Miss W. Garforth, as a certificated assistant at the Conisborough Middle School, was reported.
Miss Garforth, who succeeds Miss A. Hamilton, comes from Cramlington, Northumberland.
The resignation of Mr. H. Hicks from the staff of the Balby Street Senior School was accepted. Mr. Hicks is leaving to enter a theological college.
It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to William Kelly, a local boy, who was recently reported in this newspaper as succeeding in matriculating at the early age of 14 years 3 months. This is believed to be a record for boys in this country.
An application for the use of the Large Hall for the annual dance of the local corps of the S.J.A.B. on November 9th was granted.
