Elderly Denaby Man Fined

An elderly Denaby labourer, George Walters (71) of Barnburgh Street, was charged in custody with stealing a florin ( 2 shillings or 10p) from the shop of John Asher, Butcher, 18, Strafforth Terrace.

Superintendent Minty said the prisoner went to the shop to make a purchase, and the young lady assistant required change. She sent for some and while her back was turned she heard some coins rattling, and turning round saw the prisoner withdrawing his hand from the till. She pushed him, and he dropped all but a two shilling piece, which she snatched. He went away, and the police were informed and he was arrested.

Edith Pearson, the assistant, gave evidence. When the police brought him back he had changed his clothes, and he denied having been in the shop.

Hannah Senior identified the prisoner as the man she saw leaving the shop and PC Raper said the prisoner denied having been to the shop at all.

A fine of 10 shillings was imposed.
