Ellis Robinson
Ellis Robinson, the young Denaby all-rounder, made a highly promising debut for his county when he turned out for the Yorkshire second team against Staffordshire in the match which began on Wednesday.
Though Robinson had previously played in games under the auspices of the County Association this was the first time he had been included in the team for a Minor Counties League match. Although he made only 17 with the bat he bowled in his best style, taking 5 wickets for 13 runs in 9 overs, one of which was a maiden.
After having 77 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket, Staffordshire were all out for 88 in their first innings, and according to a contemporary “the bowling was chiefly responsible for the newcomer. Robinson, who bowls medium-paced off breaks with an occasional faster ball which he conceals very cleverly.”
Four of Robinson’s five victims were clean bowled. In the same match Tom Bottomley, the former Rawmarsh and Sheffield United player, hit up 102 not out, giving only one chance, when he had made 30.
