Engine Number 10,000 (picture)

Engine no. 10,000 emerging from Conisborough tunnel on its way to the Locomotive Exhibition at the Sheffield Victoria Station.

This locomotive represents an entire departure from orthodox design, being fitted with a water-tube boiler instead of the usual smoke-tube type.

Owing to the fact that the boiler is built in the maximum permissible dimensions, it is not possible to fit an ordinary chimney, and the contour at the front is so arranged that the smoke is thrown upward, clear of the driver’s line of sight. The trailing end is also of unusual design, being carried on two separate radial axles.

The engine and tender are over 75 feet in length, and weight 186 tons.
