An Expensive Short Cut
Conisborough Miners Fined For Damage

Four Conisborough miners named John Shakespeare, Horace Shakespeare, Arthur Lane and George Lane, were summoned at the instance of Mr Bosdin J Clarkson for having damaged a fence at that place on the 24th ult.

PC Ransom stated that at 5.35 a.m., on the date in question, he was on duty in Denaby Road, new Conisborough, when he saw the four defendants go across a grass field. The then got over a fence and went on to the highway to the Cadeby Main Colliery.

In getting over they broke down the thorns.

Complainant was called, and said that people were continually getting over his fences, and his man’s time was almost entirely occupied in repairing them. He estimated the damage at 1/-against each defendant.

John Shakespeare and Arthur Lane, who appeared, denied the offence, stating that they went across the field, it being a short cut to work, but they got over a wall and did not break down the fence.

They were ordered to pay the costs and damage; and the other two defendants, who did not appear 5/-and costs.
