Extraordinary “Find” of Ironstone.

We are informed that a most extraordinary find of ironstone has recently taken place near Conisbro’.

A gentleman well known in the village, who dabbles somewhat in geology, noticed about twelve months ago that the water of the brook was an unusual colour, and from its appearance he felt sure that somewhere along its course iron would be found. He communicated his idea to a friend, who assured him in his turn that he had often seen ironstone in the bed of the brook when dry.

The gentleman who first made the discovery acquainted a well-known mining engineer residing in the district with the result of his investigation, and in consequence all through last winter and the present summer months the latter has been examining the strata in the vicinity. The result of his labours proved eminently satisfactory, as a bed of ironstone of enormous thickness and of great richness has been proved to extend for five miles, from a point near the Holywell Brewery in the direction of Micklebring.

Such a discovery near the centre of the steel industry is extremely valuable, and is likely to cause a great transformation in the trade of the villages and towns in the neighbourhood.

In addition to the ironstone, large quantities of iron ore have been discovered, which has been tested and proved to be of first-rate quality. The bed of ironstone is on the estate of Lord Conyers and on some property belonging to Mr. Fisher, of Doncaster.

Close to the ironstone are extremely valuable beds of coal, at present unworked. We understand that a company either has been formed, or is in process of formation, for the purpose of working the ironstone in connection with the discovery.

A line of railway, it is confidently stated, has been projected by the Great Eastern and Midland Railway Companies, from a point near Rotherham to Swinton and Knottingley line, passing through Mexbro’, and terminating at the South Kirby Colliery. — Mexbro’ Times.
