False Pretences at Cadeby Colliery

Samuel Sidebottom, a filler, living at Mexborough, and employed at the Cadeby Colliery, was summoned for stealing 3d (1 ¼ p) from the Denby and Cadeby colliery Company

Mr Hickmott, solicitor, Rotherham, appeared on behalf of the company.

The offence was committed on the 12th ult. Two day men fill the tub with coal and marked it with the company’s number which was 1000. This was written in chalk. The corve was left in the place.

A deputy subsequently going to the spot noted that the chalk marks were partially obliterated, and that a ‘motty’ had been attached to the corve. The number was nine; that was the number of the collier with whom the defendant worked.

The deputy went to the defendant about it, and he admitted having put the motty on. His explanation was that he thought his mate had missed ‘mottying’ it.

Fined 50 shillings including costs.
