Famous Footballer’s Son Home with Broken Leg (picture)

Footballing son of a famous footballing father, 15-year-old Jack Barker is at home with a broken leg sustained at practice earlier in January.

Jack plays with Denaby Church in the Mexborough Intermediate League.

Before coming to Conisbrough the Barker family were at Derby and it was there at Derby that young Jack was given his first chance with Derby Boys (under 14).

In the 1945-46 season they reached the semi-final of the English Schools’ Shield, losing to Stockton. The team stuck together after leaving school, going under the name of Derby Old Boys. After playing with them for two seasons, Jack joined Allestree, and it was while playing for them against Derby Old Boys that he first broke a leg. While at Derby’ he also played for Rolls Royce Juniors in the Derby and District League (under 18).

He now works as an apprentice electrician at Denaby Main Colliery. Jack (senior) has been home to see his son. He is now manager – coach to Dundalk.
